“I Want My Child to be Able to Succeed When They Grow Up!”

These are the words I have consistently heard throughout my tenure as an occupational therapist working with students on the Autism spectrum. The words resonate on a daily basis because every parent can identify and see the special parts of their own child. They see the abilities when others can't. They have the patience when others don't. And they're willing to try when others won't. Unfortunately though, parents can not hold their child's hand forever. As a parent myself I recognize this, which is probably why I am so hard on my own kids to do for themselves. But to watch some of my clients every day, I must admit that I struggle because I see their potential, but once they leave the "services age" they seem to get lost in the shuffle.

I am hoping that this blog will give both transition age students and adults a platform to both share and learn about the opportunities out there. Whether it be life skills opportunities, employment opportunities, or just therapies available to assist with success, there are many opportunities available. As an occupational therapist the majority of what I share will be in my wheelhouse, but I will attempt to go outside of my own profession with researched information. So please stay tuned and share your thoughts. I always love to hear what others think!
